This resistance causes the cells to heat up, creating "hot spots" that can permanently damage the solar panel or even trigger fires. Bypass diodes inside the PV junction box prevent this by redirecting the electrical current around the shaded cells, thereby maintaining the overall efficiency of the panel and ensuring the physical safety of the entire installation.

Modern solar panels feature higher power outputs and higher current capacities, requiring junction boxes to handle greater thermal and electrical loads.
